Marathon training and hot tub hydrotherapy
As the weeks lead up to my marathon, training has become quite intense and my body is feeling the physical stresses of running longer and harder. I can understand why the training program is designed the way that it is as it allows your body the time to get use to the long distances and recover on off days. We are well over the half-way point of training and, I, like the majority of runners am experiencing muscle soreness and shin splints. Not only does this make training uncomfortable, but it can also make it difficult to stay on track. Thankfully I haven’t missed a training session yet as I am using various means to keep my legs strong and ready for the race.
The benefits of hot tub hydrotherapy are abundant, one of those being ‘healing’. The warm water and jet massage have been extremely helpful at soothing tired and achy muscles. Warm water dilates blood vessels which in turn enhances blood flow to the muscles and joints. In addition, the heat and buoyancy of water allow for a bit of increased flexibility, making the hot tub a great place for an effective stretching session.
It has been an absolute treat to be able to reap the benefits of hot tub hydrotherapy in my own backyard throughout this training process. Hot tubs are great for relaxation and rejuvenation… two things I need most at the end of hard run to feel rested and yet motivated to head out again the next day.
