When considering adding a swimming pool to your backyard, safety must be of the utmost concern. Pool fencing is your first line of defence for your swimming pool safety, helping to keep pets and kids safe when there is no adult supervision.

Pool fencing comes in three main types. Let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Ornamental Aluminum

Ornamental aluminum is elegant in appearance and very durable. The aluminum used in these fences is coated with a type of dry powder that is bonded to the aluminum with heat. This type of fencing is sometimes confused with wrought iron fencing, which is very heavy, expensive and time-consuming to maintain.

Aluminum fencing is perfect for use  where privacy is not an issue and is great for landscaping where you don’t want to obstruct the view, such as a waterfront property. Although black is the most popular colour choice, aluminum fencing is also available in white, bronze or green through some manufacturers.

Advantages:

  • Extremely durable
  • Low maintenance
  • Relatively inconspicuous

Disadvantages:

  • Doesn’t provide privacy

PVC Fencing

PVC fencing comes in two main styles; standard, which is 48-54-inches tall with solid slats or spaced pickets, or privacy, which is 6-7-feet tall with the slats butted together to make a solid panel. Sometimes, there is a lattice or spindles on the top foot of a privacy fence for ornamental purposes.

PVC fencing is durable, low maintenance and provides great privacy. White is the colour of most PVC fences but many manufacturers also offer PVC fencing in tan.

Advantages:

  • Great privacy fence
  • Low maintenance
  • Many styles available
  • Can be adapted to custom heights for little or no additional charge

Disadvantages:

  • Gates tend to sag over time
  • Pickets and rails are much thicker and considered too bulky by some
  • White colour is very conspicuous
  • Mildew can form on the fence in wet/shady areas

Wood Fencing

Wood fencing continues to be popular for use around pools. Because it is a natural material, it looks great in any setting and makes a great privacy fence. Wood fences do require some basic maintenance but they can endure the harsh weather that Canada offers up from time to time and provides years of serviceability and natural beauty.

Wood fencing will give you security, privacy and beauty and can be customized to compliment any home.

Advantages:

  • Size and style are completely customizable
  • Less expensive than PVC or aluminum
  • Can be painted or stained in the colour of your choice

Disadvantages:

  • Requires more maintenance
  • Can warp and twist over time
